Creney is a town of about 2000 inhabitants. It is located a few kilometres east of Troyes. Creney is particularly well served by road infrastructures and also offers an important economic and commercial activity.
Creney-près-Troyes was strongly impacted by the Second World War. This game will make you discover some of the dramas that occurred through history. Today, this village is a true haven of peace, an enjoyable place that you will discover while walking for a few kilometres today.
The patron saint of Creney is Saint Aventin. His relics were given to the church of Creney in 1605 by Saint Etienne of Troyes. The church was built in the 12th and 16th centuries.
The western portal was partly built in the 19th century. The other part and the tower were built during the second half of the 12th century. Most of the stained-glass windows were made in the beginning of the 16th century, and others, of a more contemporary style, were designed by Max Ingrand in 1958. You can also admire a virgin from the 13th century and a strange tombstone from the 14th century.

On 22 August 1944, at around 5pm, on this Creney firing range, forty-nine prisoners from Troyes prison were shot without trial by SS officers from the Rennes Gestapo, who had retreated to Troyes. They used machine guns and revolvers. The bodies were left unburied in three shallow trenches used as graves.
The mayor and the priest of Creney, Fernand PIERLOT, as well as many inhabitants of the town, went to the scene of massacre to try to identify the victims so that the bodies could be returned to their families before burying them in temporary graves.
In the following days, the abbot PIERLOT and a few poorly armed inhabitants of Creney took the German prisoners, while they were retreating in groups of three or four along the road RN60, which runs through the village. They managed to take 86 German prisoners, including General VON SCHRAM and his staff, who are then handed over to the American liberators.

Continue straight on towards the RTE site.
Until 1960, this site was called “STEDIF”, meaning “Société de Transport d’électricité de l’Ile-de-France” (Electricity Transportation Company of the Ile-de-France region” This name can still be seen on the pediment of the buildings on the Creney site, then it became EDF until 2000.
The RTE company, meaning “Réseau de Transport d’électricité” (Electricity Transportation Network) is responsible for the transportation and supply of electricity on the high and very high voltage lines, before the distribution (it represents almost 105,000 km of lines).
The transmission system operator is responsible for everybody’s 24/7, all year long access to an economical, safe, and clean electricity supply in France and Europe. It must also introduce renewable energies and optimise their contribution, while taking part to public decisions and promoting the development of the territories industries.
