While you are there, you might be wondering where the name La Rivière de Corps (“The bodies river” literally) comes from. It’s a scary name indeed! And there are many hypotheses as to its origins. The most fanciful refers to the many deaths caused during the battle of the Catalaunic Fields between Attila and Aetius, who were then swept away by the river that gives its name to “La Rivière de(s) Corps”.
In fact, the origin of the name is more rural. After the Middle Ages, the waste from the city of Troyes was sought after by farmers for growing vegetables. At the time, the commune of La Rivière de Corps was engaged in intensive farming, using the neighbouring town’s sludge for fertiliser. The “corps” would then have been flat-bottomed rafts or boats that travelled on the Vienne River to transport vegetables to the town.
Whatever the case, the origin of the name La Rivière de Corps does indeed come from the Vienne river.

In 1945, an abbot in charge of catechism was worried about finding premises. The Sainte-Savine parish was a long way away, so the need for a place of worship was paramount.
The chapel was built in a barn donated by Mr and Mrs LEGROS-MASSEY in 1945. It was financed by plays, fairs and collections.
