Montsuzain

Now, put your trainers on and stroll through the streets and hidden treasures of this village, starting from the car park of the town hall and church of Montsuzain, at the corner between the streets “rue du Stade” and “ruelle de l’Église” (N48°26’38.8″ E4°07’55.9″).

In the street “ruelle de l’église”, look carefully at the details of the war memorial built to commemorate and honour the soldiers killed during the wars. These monuments are considered either as cenotaphs (mortuary monuments with no bodies usually in the centre of a town or village) or as memorials (national monuments erected on the battlefields). With the mourning of the Great War, the communes decided to pay tribute to their inhabitants dead for the Fatherland. During the years 1920-1925, 35,000 war memorials were erected (more than 95 % of the French communes have one).
