Thennelières
Located 8 km east of Troyes, the village of Thennelières is the gateway to the Orient Forest Regional Nature Park and the road “route du balcon du lac”.
Welcome in Thennelières !
The name Tanoclaria appears in the archives for this village since the 9th century. It was of great feudal importance during the Middle Ages and was renowned with three successive seigneurial houses. The Paillot family even made it a county under the name of Paillot. A fortified castle surrounded by deep moats already existed since 1338 and ensured the defence of the outskirts of the town of Troyes (it was still cited in 1767). In 1790, the village took back its original name of Thennelières, the castle was destroyed. Today, only some remains of the Seigneurial farm can still be seen (the construction of a hotel is planned).
Thennelières offers a pleasant living environment combining protection of the natural environment, preservation of the historical heritage and economic development, as well as countryside peacefulness and proximity of the city.

The French Campaign was the first great war of invasion of the national territory, which led to the creation of Modern Europe and the Treaty of Vienna. Discover in Thennelières one of the 25 epic moments of this Campaign in the heart of the Regional Nature Park of the Orient Forest, in an almost unchanged landscape.
Now, look closely at the war memorial.
These monuments are considered either as “cenotaphs” (mortuary monuments that do not contain any bodies, generally installed in the centre of a town or village) or as “memorials” (national monuments erected on the battlefields). With the mourning of the Great War, the communes decided to pay tribute to the dead for the Fatherland. During the years 1920-1925, 35,000 war memorials were erected (more than 95% of French communes have one).

In the middle of the village, the church has a Romanesque nave from the 10th and 12th centuries. The choir and transept date from the 16th century. The whole building was entirely restored in the 19th century. The slenderness of its bell tower and its roof, combined with the wooden sections of the canopy and the dressed stone give it a rural charm. Its 16th century stained-glass windows were classified as historical monuments in 1908. A member of the Dinteville family is partly buried in this church. The hearts of Gaucher de Dinteville and Anne du Plessy lie beneath a black and white marble plaque inlaid with copper. These were later transferred to the church in Polisy.
However, the highlight of the building is undoubtedly the recumbent statue of Louise de Coligny, which has very realistic features, dating from the end of the 16th century. It is made of white marble and rests on a black marble plaque.
