Rouilly-Saint-Loup
The town of Rouilly-Saint-Loup is located 9 km to the east of Troyes. This quiz or treasure hunt is an ideal way to discover this village (based on a treasure hunt created by pupils at Rouilly school in 2013).
Welcome to Rouilly-Saint-Loup !
A number of archaeological discoveries have shown that the first inhabitants of the area were Gauls (jewellery dated between 325 and 275 BC and coins dated around 60 BC), followed by Romans (medals and stone coffins also found in the area). In the 7th century, Rouilly was known as Ralliacum. It later became part of the castellany of Isle-Aumont. The Counts of Champagne donated some of their lands and rights (particularly those over Rouilly) to the Abbey of Saint Loup in Troyes. At the end of the 13th century, the village was naturally renamed Rouilly-Saint-Loup.
This charming commune now offers a number of pleasant walks (the Baires canal, St Julien Les Villas or the lakes biking track, which links Troyes to the Orient Forest Regional Nature Park as far as Dienville, a distance of 51 km).
During this treasure hunt, when the questions require you to cross the road, please be careful and vigilant. Ready to discover the treasures of Rouilly-Saint-Loup?
Enjoy your discovery/walk, pay attention to the details, you can do it!
On the façade of the town hall, you will find the motto of the French Republic since 1848: “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” (“Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood”). This wording incorporates the notions of liberty and equality contained in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen voted by the Constituent Assembly in August 1789, and the idea of fraternity contained in the (drafted for the establishment of the 2nd Republic in France).
A 1st version of this motto, created by the revolutionaries, saw the light of day with the proclamation of the Republic on the 22nd of September 1792. You can still see it in its original version in Lagny and Troyes (if others still exist, please let us know!).

Originally Romanesque, it was remodelled in the 16th century with a double transept. The western entrance is via a charming timber-framed porch. The building has some examples of 16th-century stained glass and numerous representations of the man who gave his name to the village: Bishop Loup.

Make your way to the back of the Saint Loup room, where a number of “relics” are on display. The equipment once used by the Rouilly fire brigade is on display. Axes, tanks, uniforms, etc. are skilfully presented to the public (don’t forget your glasses if you wear them).
Bravo !
